The bird flew very well, easily keeping pace with other ducks. We first saw it when it was flying with 4 or 5 Mallards about 50 m from us. We saw it primarily in flight, so could not determine if it had legbands. It appeared to be in fresh plumage, based on views only in flight (no obvious flight feather molt). I also saw it briefly standing on the ground, but at a greater distance (about 200 m) so could not get more details on feather wear or see its legs. We also noted the dark chocolate cap contrasting with pale supercilium, dark eyestripe, and paler cheeks and throat contrasting with the back of the neck and the body. The speculum had no pale leading or trailing edges. There are plenty of eclipse- and transitional-plumaged Mallards at the slough to look at for comparison.”"

Looking closer, I found a downy nestling that had recently died, pieces of pale blue-green egg shell, and a small fish. Then I saw the stick nest in the canopy of the small tree. I believe the nest had been disturbed and deserted. There are many crows and raccoons in the area. I regularly pass beneath this tree every few days and had missed all evidence of the Green Heron nesting. I was also surprised by the late nesting."

We were there early yesterday morning and the 4 babies were VERY active, running short dashes across the branches and twigs, generally limbing about and being quite rambunctious. So it was with sadness this morning that we heard that one baby was dead on the ground, the nest was mostly destroyed and there was no sight of the others... save one that had just nearly been run over as it crossed that now very busy street. (Heavy construction in the area means most traffic is now diverted onto this usually quiet street.) So, we quickly called Willamette Wildlife to be sure someone was there to receive this possibly injured baby Green heron and we dashed down to see if we could get it safely in a box and to them for help. Sheet in hand, we were able to catch the youngster by covering it with the sheet and carefully placing it into the box. We carefully searched the entire area, including in the heavily planted landscaping across the street around the dental complex, and we notified two of the dental offices giving them numbers to call if other youngsters appear (unlikely)."

I have seen many swifts and while it can be challenging to tell them apart in the tropics, they are not that hard to be recognized as swifts."

I would guess that it is using a lot of the appropriate habitat in the NE quadrant of EE Wilson. Fortunately, it is singing and the song is quite distinctive and there are chats to entertain you while you listen for the vireo. We saw and heard the bird on both sides of the road ~200m N of the chain-link fenced area. Judging from Doug Robinson's sightings, the bird was also heard ~300-400 NW of this location along the northernmost E-W paved road."

The bird was hanging very tight in a row of medium-sized cottonwoods ~250 m north of the NE corner of the barbwire topped cyclone fenced area described by others. If you proceed due north from this corner of the fenced area, there is a small cluster of reasonably tall cottonwoods on the right side of the road about 250 m to the north. Behind these cottonwoods there is a row of smaller cottonwoods mixed with some other deciduous trees. The vireo was in this clump for the entire 45 minutes I watched and listened to it. At a pretty good walking pace it took me 20 minutes from the parking lot to get to this area."

I took the liberty to insert two frozen plastic chili pepper ice cubes 1/2| under the nest cups in the near corners of both of these side-opening boxes. 1 1/2 hours later Karan went to refresh these, and the nestlings had all snuggled over the 'peppers'. I'm not recommending this intervention, but at the end of the day, we at least still have live nestlings. One of the four total did fledge at the refreshing time, and flew off well enough that its fate is unknown, but parent swallows are still tending the boxes."

The second observer has previously seen Red Crossbill in the birdbath visited by this bird, and noted differences in bill proportions and general structure of crossbill vs. the more sleek & elongated bird that visited on Sunday. She said the wings were just a darker shade of red rather than brownish (as on crossbill) or black as on Scarlet tanager. She has also been seeing a Western Tanager there for comparison. She also heard the bird call and has compared to sound clips on line. The bird has not returned to that yard since Sunday. A search of fruit trees in that general neighborhood might be productive."

I am heading back out to try for photos, but the bird did not show the head/back contrast and the tail is huge. The bird seemed much larger than the Yellowheads. More later."
