The bird flew very well, easily keeping pace with other ducks. We first saw it when it was flying with 4 or 5 Mallards about 50 m from us. We saw it primarily in flight, so could not determine if it had legbands. It appeared to be in fresh plumage, based on views only in flight (no obvious flight feather molt). I also saw it briefly standing on the ground, but at a greater distance (about 200 m) so could not get more details on feather wear or see its legs. We also noted the dark chocolate cap contrasting with pale supercilium, dark eyestripe, and paler cheeks and throat contrasting with the back of the neck and the body. The speculum had no pale leading or trailing edges. There are plenty of eclipse- and transitional-plumaged Mallards at the slough to look at for comparison.”

I really can't add anything more to the description they wrote, and saw the same features that they did. In flight it did appear a little chunkier, but this may be because it is black and stands out more. I did not see any white bordering the speculum as well, and the underside of the wings is whitish.”

Oddly, the neck was also salt and pepper both front and back, in contrast to the all dark neck of the typical drake it was associating with.

We noted how she was light brown/beige with some whitish spots, not really sooty-looking at all. Since the bird showed no indication of moving and was in danger of being struck by the next vehicle to come up the hill, Jeff ran up the road to shoo her away. It looked like Jeff might have to pick her up and move her off with his hands, but finally when he came within about six feet, the bird took a couple of steps and flew off into the trees.

In the company of 2 male Ring-necked Ducks, it was sleeping and preening. Easy ID because the bird is still in breeding plumage; eye is clearly surrounded by white, not dark feathers; bill is orangish-yellow on lower mandible and lower half of upper mandible; hindneck is narrowly marked with black on upper portion and grayish-black on lower portion; back is gray and sides are grayish white.
