It was exercising its wings and moving around most of the time. At first I thought it to be a pied-billed grebe. The other was floating near it not moving much. Its face was more grayish with a bit of white at throat and longer dark neck. The bill was large, and the head was large. They were out in the middle and I only had my 8 X 42 ranger eagle optics. I suspect they both were RED-NECKED GREBE, being an adult and juvenile."

We circled around to include the Zumwalt peninsula on the west side and Perkin's Peninsula on the south. From Perkin's, we could see a large number of grebes in the south end reeds to the west, and they appeared to be mostly Clark's Grebes. Some of these were with young. Most of the grebes seen from the north on the lake appeared to be Westerns, but a few Clark's were identified."

Dave Irons suggested that this may have undercounted by perhaps 20%. 'We were finding most of the birds around the perimeter of the lake and there was a large area in the middle of the lake where the birds were spread out and difficult to count due to heat waves, glare and distance. At most, I think there might be 1000 birds on the reservoir. Of these, we were able to clearly ID about 250-300 to species and we detected at least 32 Clark's Grebes. Based on this ratio, I would guess that Clark's represent perhaps 10% of the total population. he nesting season for these grebes is extremely protracted. Today I actually saw a pair of Westerns get up and run across the water. We saw several downy young birds still riding on the backs of adults and lots of free-swimming half grown juveniles.'"
