Links and Info for Young Birders

by Karl Fairchild

If you are looking at this page, and you are a young birder in Oregon, please e-mail me, Karl Fairchild, at dendroicaman@peak.org and let me know you are out there.  I'd be happy to answer any questions, to let you know if there are any youth birders near you, and to let you know if there are any upcoming events.  If there's interest, I'd be willing to put together a list of all the younger birders in Oregon so that we can communicate and meet each other.

If you're a young birder, or if you're interested in what other young birders are up to, check these links out!

  • American Birding Association Young Birders Home Page
Do birds fascinate you? Do you want to learn more about them? Do you want to meet other teenaged birders? Then ABA is for you! Some of the best young birders are already active in ABA, learning more about birds and helping with conservation.

  • Teen BirdChat
The first listserv for young birders, Teen Bird Chat is a good way to stay informed about ABA young birder events and meet other young birders.  It has seen a recent slowing in activity, but is still informative.

  • Youngbirder
Youngbirder is a more recent addition to the young birder community.  It is a great place to meet people and is very active.  Share thoughts on birds, birding, and what it means to be a young birder.

NOTE: Youngbirder is geared toward "anyone who is young at heart," so
younger young birders may occasionally find language inappropriate.

Surfbirds provides online bird list rankings if you're feeling a bit competitive and want to see how other youngbirders are doing.

Used optics are needed for young Oregon birders.

Oregon Field Ornithologists is seeking donations of used optics to be given to youth birding groups in Oregon.  Binoculars, scopes, and other equipment is needed for several high school and youth birding groups so that they can learn to study and appreciate Oregon birds.

If you have optics to donate, please contact Chuck Gates at cgates@empnet.com who can coordinate pickup of your donation.  If you have a youth birding group or you are a young birder you can contact Chuck to be put on the list of candidates. Thank you for helping to support youth birding.

Anyone under the age of 19 can do Christmas Bird Counts for free.
